Making Tax Digital
Making Tax Digital (MTD) is a UK government initiative aimed at transforming the tax system by moving it fully online. Under MTD, individuals and businesses must keep digital financial records and submit their tax information using MTD-compatible software.
MTD is being introduced in stages, and it is currently mandatory for all VAT-registered businesses.
MTD for Income Tax
The next phase of MTD will apply to self-employed individuals and landlords with qualifying income above certain thresholds:
-
From April 2026: Income over £50,000 per year
-
From April 2027: Income over £30,000 per year
-
From April 2028: Expected to include those with income over £20,000 per year
Directors and MTD
If you are a company director and your only income is from salary and dividends, you will not be required to register for MTD for Income Tax. You will continue to report your income through the Self Assessment tax return process as usual.
